Yacob BIZUNEH
Yacob Bizuneh Negera est né en 1983 à Addis-Abeba, en Éthiopie. Après des études en dessin technique, il entre à l’Ecole Alle des Beaux-Arts et de Design de l’université d’Addis Abeba où il obtient un diplôme de peinture (BFA) en 2013. Il y enseignera jusqu’à son départ pour la France en 2017.
Dès ses premiers projets personnels, Yacob Bizuneh explore les champs sociaux, économiques et politiques et leurs conséquences sur le bien-être humain des sociétés qu’il traverse. Au grand marché d’Addis Abeba, il développe une série de peintures, d’assemblages et de performances sur le thème du recyclage des bidons de pétrole et de l’aliénation des ouvriers ferrailleurs, pris dans un cycle infernal où leur vie se vide de sa substance : Circle and Hollow, 2013. En 2015, dans une performance publique, Under Construction, un homme d’affaire, en costume, cravate et attaché case recouvre l’artiste de peinture jaune et verte, comme ces barrières de chantier qui signalent l’expulsion massive des habitants de quartiers voués à la spéculation immobilière.
C’est lors d’un séjour à Séoul, en 2015, que Yacob Bizuneh découvre ceux qu’il nomme les Moving Shadows (Ombres mouvantes). Des individus circulent dans la ville, les yeux rivés sur leur tablette ou leur smartphone, hors de l’espace et du temps qui relient les hommes entre eux, inconscients d’eux-mêmes et des autres. Passant d’une société du «nous» à une société du «je» en pleine mutation, Yacob Bizuneh donne une traduction visuelle à ce choc culturel. Qu’il emploie la peinture, la sculpture ou l’installation vidéo, il tente d’appréhender le destin de ces silhouettes noires absorbées par leurs tablettes miroirs, présences absentes qui hantent le métro de Séoul ou de Paris dans Subway Shadows, 2015 et Still Shadows, 2019.
Yacob Bizuneh Negera was born in 1983 in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. After studying technical drawing he enrolled in the University of Addis Ababa’s Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, graduating with a degree in painting (BFA) in 2013. He taught there until his departure for France in 2017.
From the time of his earliest personal work, Yacob Bizouneh has continued to explore social, economic and political developments, and their consequences for human well-being in the countries he has visited. At the large market in Addis Ababa he developed a series of paintings, assemblages and performances on the theme of the recycling of oil drums and the alienation of scrap metal workers, who are caught in an infernal and deadening cycle: Circle and Hollow, 2013. In the 2015 public performance Under Construction, a businessman wearing a suit and tie and holding an attaché case covered the artist with yellow and green paint, like the construction site barriers that indicate the mass expulsion of the inhabitants of neighbourhoods slated to disappear due to real estate speculation.
During a stay in Seoul in 2015, Yacob Bizouneh discovered the people he calls Moving Shadows (Ombres mouvantes). People who move around the city with their eyes glued to their tablets and smartphones, disconnected from the space and time that link people, unaware of themselves and others. Going from a “we” society to a continually evolving “I” society, Yacob Bizouneh translates this culture shock into a visual object. Whether through painting, sculpture, or video installations, in Subway Shadows, 2015 and Still Shadows, 2019, he tries to capture the destinies of these dark silhouettes that are completely absorbed by their mirror-like tablets: the absent presences that haunt the metros of Seoul and Paris.
