Sulafa HIJAZI
Née à Damas en 1976, Sulafa Hijazi est diplômée de l’Institut supérieur de théâtre de Damas. Elle entame une carrière de scénariste et réalisatrice de films d’animation pour enfants et d’autres productions multimédia destinées à l’éducation et au développement social. Très populaires dans le monde arabe, ses créations sont diffusées à la télévision et dans de nombreux festivals. Son film d’animation The Jasmine Bird est couronné de prix à Hollywood, en Russie, en Inde, en Egypte et en Iran. Pionnière dans son domaine, elle est à l’origine de la première chaîne satellite arabe pour enfants Scapetoon, lancée en 2000. En 2010, elle fonde la maison de production Bluedar. Lorsqu’arrive la révolution de 2011, elle met son talent au service de l’opposition pacifique et publie des œuvres digitales critiques du régime. Elle doit fuir la Syrie en 2012 et entre à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Francfort où elle expérimente différentes formes d’art conceptuel et multimédia. Elle vit aujourd’hui à Berlin.
Sulafa Hijazi s’est fait connaître dans le monde de l’art et des médias au travers d’une série de dessins digitaux produits entre 2011 et 2015 et qu’elle a réunis sous le titre de Ongoing. En continu, comme la guerre qui ne finit pas, la violence d’un régime autoritaire et répressif qui sévit depuis l’enfance, les traumatismes, l’exil et l’adaptation à un nouveau pays, à une nouvelle liberté. Ses dessins analysent, de façon métaphorique et parfois sarcastique, les relations intimes qui relient l’homme et la guerre en Syrie. La plupart ont été publiés dans les journaux du monde entier pour leur efficacité et leur universalité. Aujourd’hui Sulafa Hijazi continue ses expérimentations digitales et travaille sur l’univers numérique et les rapports entre la technologie et l’humain.
Born in Damascus in 1976, Sulafa Hijazi graduated from the Damascus Higher Institute for Dramatic Arts. She began writing scenarios and making animated films for children, also creating multimedia productions to promote education and social development. Her work is very popular in the Arab world, and has been seen on television and shown at many festivals. Her animated film The Jasmine Bird has received awards in Hollywood, Russia, India, Egypt and Iran. A pioneer in her field, she is the creator of Scapetoon, the first Arab satellite channel for children, which was launched in 2000. In 2010 she founded the Bluedar production company. During the 2011 revolution, this talented artist supported the peaceful opposition, publishing digital works that criticised the regime. In 2012 she had to flee Syria. She enrolled in The Frankfurt Academy of Fine Arts, where she experimented with various types of conceptual and multimedia art. Today she lives in Berlin.
Sulafa Hijazi became recognised in the art world and the media through a series of digital drawings she created between 2011 and 2015, which she grouped together under the title Ongoing. Ongoing, like the never-ending war, the continual violence of a repressive authoritarian regime that has been in power since her childhood, the trauma and the exile, the stress of having to adapt to a new country and new freedom. Her drawings provide a metaphorical and sometimes sarcastic analysis of the intimate connections between men and war in Syria. Owing to their power and their universal appeal, most of them have been published in newspapers all over the world. Today Sulafa Hijazi continues her digital experiments, working in the field of numeric creation and examining the relationship between human beings and technology.
